• Anesthetic Technique and Cancer Recurrence -- In a retrospective study Lai and colleagues found that regional anesthesia for cancer surgery is associated with an increased risk of cancer recurrence compared with general anesthesia in patients undergoing percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of small hepatocellular carcinoma.
• Ketorolac Postoperative Pain -- A meta-analysis by De Oliveira Jr. and colleagues confirms an important role for 60 mg of ketorolac in multimodal postoperative analgesia, a benefit not confirmed for the 30 mg dose. An editorial by White and colleagues reviews studies supporting the clinical efficacy of 30 mg of ketorolac.
• Impact of Phenylephrine on Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes -- A review by Habib documents an association between phenylephrine in cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia, reduced intraoperative nausea and vomiting, and higher umbilical artery pH than ephedrine.
• Wound Catheter Is Efficient After Minimally Invasive Surgery for Hip Arthroplasty -- In a prospective study, Aguirre and colleagues demonstrate that a simple infusion of local anesthetic into the wound following minimally invasive hip arthroplasty significantly reduces morphine consumption.
• Oxytocin Inhibits Sensory Afferents -- In a study of rat dorsal root ganglion cells, Hobo and colleagues found that oxytocin inhibits excitatory neurotransmitter release from peripheral primary sensory afferents, including nociceptors.
