Supporting the Failing Heart in Major Surgery.*

Wendell S. Dove, M.D.

Almirante, Panama.

Abstract

AMONG THE GRAVER COMPLICATIONS with which the surgeon has to deal during or following operation, that of circulatory failure occurring either as a primary complication or as a part of a secondary complication stands as the most important issue to be met. For what serious medical or surgical complication do we see in which the prognosis does not depend ultimately upon the condition of the circulation? When, therefore, it occurs as a primary complication, it is an indication of conditions in which prompt treatment means everything. Occurring, as we know it does, in late secondary complications, it is largely an indication of the necessity of early support of the circulation.
