Walter Channing and the Introduction of Anesthesia in Childbirth.*

Herbert Thorns, M.D., F.A.C.S.

New Haven, Conn.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION OF ANESTHESIA and anesthetic methods into obstetrics in civilized countries was accomplished only after an opposition which was characterized by the denseness of its ignorance and the vehemence of its religious intolerance. Two names in particular are associated with this long and important struggle, and these are James Y. Simpson, of Edinburgh, and Walter Channing, of Boston.
