Abstract
Administration of cimetidine, an H2-receptor antagonist, is associated with a direct inhibition of liver microsomal enzymes and a decrease in liver blood flow resulting in a variety of clinically significant drug interactions (1,2). Cimetidine is one of the more frequently prescribed drugs in the United States and a large number of these patients who are taking cimetidine are coming to the operating room today. The effects of cimetidine on the action of muscle relaxants have not been reported. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of cimetidine on the onset and duration of action of succinylcholine.
