ERRATA

Erratum

In the January 2006 issue, in the article by Whalen et al., "The Effects of the Alveolar Recruitment Manuever and Positive End-Expiratory Pressure on Arterial Oxygenation During Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery" (Anesth Analg 2006;102:298–305) , several errors were made during the composition process. The authors and the publisher apologize for the errors:

Page 303, Left column, last sentence in 2nd paragraph, and 1st sentence in 3rd paragraph should read as follows:

In any event, there does not appear to be a simple relationship between respiratory system compliance and arterial oxygenation, suggesting that the beneficial effects of the recruitment manuever on oxygenation may not be simply related to resolution of atelectasis.

Because the effects of recruitment on oxygenation in our patients dissipated immediately after tracheal extubation, it is possible that techniques such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive pressure (BiPAP), applied by mask immediately after tracheal extubation, could help to maintain the alveolar expansion.

Page 304, left column, last paragraph should read as follows:

Furthermore, besides having an immediate effect on oxygenation, the recruitment maneuver may theoretically have longer-lasting benefits.

Page 304, right column, last paragraph, first sentence should read as follows:

In conclusion, a recruitment maneuver followed by PEEP effectively improves intraoperative oxygenation in morbidly obese patients throughout the course of operation, but it promptly dissipates after tracheal extubation.
