My research interest is patient outcomes after cardiac surgery with a particular focus on neurological complications. Over the past several years I have concentrated on neurological complications for women undergoing cardiac surgery. This attention was based on findings that showed female gender is an independent risk factor for stroke after cardiac surgery. Other professional interests include the management of perioperative arrhythmias. I further participated in industry-sponsored clinical trials of opioids, ?-2 adrenergic agonist, blood substitutes, and novel anti-inflammatory agents.
| In the past 5 years, I have received research support from the National Institutes of Health, Pfizer, Alexion, and Eisai Pharmaceuticals. In addition, I have received honoraria for lectures from Bayer Pharmaceuticals, ESP Pharma, and Hospira.
