My professional interests are the neurobehavioral pharmacology of anesthetics and analgesics. This has led us to studies of anesthetic interactions resulting in a concept that general anesthesia is based not on a single general anesthetic action but on a spectrum of separate pharmacological actions, even if the anesthesia is produced by one drug. This led to a conclusion that the search for a reliable index of anesthetic depth should be transformed into a search for separate indices of different components of anesthesia. Our studies of anesthetic interactions indicated that a neuraxial blockade can profoundly enhance the hypnotic effect of general anesthetics. We have also demonstrated that, in animal models, neural blockade with vanilloid agonists (resiniferatoxin) prevents incisional pain and do not affect non-painful sensation to touch or motor function.
