Professional Interests
Professional Interests: Although my early research in Finland focused on nutrition, I gradually became interested in other aspects of critical care. In the late 1980s, with a team of investigators at the Kuopio University Hospital, I began to study the interrelationships between splanchnic tissue perfusion and the pathophysiology of multiorgan dysfunction. That research continued when I moved to Bern, Switzerland, in 1999. As Chairman of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital, I head both clinical and experimental research in critical care, focusing on pathophysiology of organ dysfunctions in critical care patients. In parallel, I have continued to pursue my interests in costs and quality, protocols for weaning and sedation, resource use, and the organization of intensive care.
