• Patient safety: studies designed to improve the safety of surgical patients undergoing anesthesia; assessment of innovative methods of education and training to improve patient safety; participation in national foundations dedicated to advancing the safety of surgical patients undergoing anesthesia (Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, APSF).
• Neuromuscular physiology and pharmacology and safety/outcome of postoperative patients: monitoring of evoked neuromuscular responses and clinical applications of monitoring of neuromuscular function; effects of depolarizing and non-depolarizing muscle relaxants on monitoring; novel methods of monitoring of evoked responses in patients recovering from anesthesia and surgery; investigations of novel agents for reversal of neuromuscular block.
• Physiology of spinal anesthesia and patient safety and outcome: application of physiologic principles in the clinical setting; measurement of the zones of differential block induced by spinal and epidural anesthesia; impact of sympathetic denervation on hemodynamic maintenance during anesthesia (safety and outcome).
• Pre-emptive analgesia and patient outcome: mechanisms of peripheral and central sensitization that follow tissue injury; mechanisms for the development of chronic pain syndromes following peripheral tissue injury.
| Within the last 5 years, I have conducted clinical research that was partially funded by Organon (part of Schering-Plough).
